Finding clients, growing your coaching business

You might be a coach, a trainer, therapist, personal trainer, PR consultant or other service-based solo entrepreneur. The chances are you are great at what you do, and you got into your line of work because you love it, or because you wanted to help people. How does the reality compare with the dream?

Many service solo entrepreneurs either work all hours just to break even, and end up exhausted and fed up; or despite all the hope and optimism in the world, are no nearer to leaving the day job than they were months or years ago. They become demoralised by the constant search for new clients; or disappointed that yet again they aren’t going to make their financial targets.

It doesn’t have to be like that!

Yet these are scenarios that are all too familiar to many service-based solo-entrepreneurs. The challenge is that it’s not enough to be a wonderful coach, a great therapist or a wonderful trainer – you also need to be a business person, and you need to understand how to run a small business.

It’s not your fault that you are unprepared for that aspect of your role. It’s unlikely that your training really prepared you for this – they were more likely to have concentrated on your professional skills. You may have attended a few courses that explained about different trading options and your tax liabilities, but it’s not enough. You end up taking an ad-hoc approach to marketing – perhaps you place the odd ad in the local paper, or dabble in social media, or print leaflets that pile up in the spare room, or go to networking events and wonder why it doesn’t bring you business. I’ve been there, and got the T shirt!

I understand that eventually you run out of money, motivation and enthusiasm. The business that you thought would free you up is nothing more than a failed dream at best and a huge worry at worst.
